An information site for people about Cairns, Australia
If you’re looking for free things to do in Cairns, you most certainly have to check out the Cairns Lagoon.
The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is a picturesque communal area bustling with activity, with good reason. It’s a 4800 sq metre salt water lagoon, available for people living in Cairns and tourists all year round, providing not only a place to cool off, but also a facility for Cairns “Active Living” classes, where people can join in on the free Aqua Aerobics classes. The lagoon also proves to be a favourite amongst the kids.
If you are on the hunt for things to do in Cairns with kids, they will love it down at the Esplanade Lagoon. Being man made, the shores are all sand, so they can frolic along the shores and build sand castles, or head in the shallows and have a ball. The water is consistently pumped and filtered from the Trinity Inlet, so you can rest assured that you and your children are swimming in clean, crystal clear waters.
Aside from the swimming, there’s ample room for balls games, picnics or even a nice nap under the trees. The lagoon is also surrounded by BBQ facilities all over, so take down some snags and steaks and cook yourself up a mean lunch or dinner. Breakfast is my favourite down there though.
Early in the mornings is by far the best time to hit the lagoon. The air is fresh, the pool is empty, the sprinklers are on and it’s dead quiet. On a beautiful sunny Cairns morning, there is nowhere else I would be than down there. The mountain backdrop in the background, the glistening reflection off the ocean, watching the sea planes coming in for a landing… beautiful.
There have been times though, when I have headed down there in the peak of the day and all you can hear is the birds. People are just laying around. Some sleeping, some swimming, some reading. It’s an amazing thing to witness and makes living in Cairns all the more sweeter.
So… if you’re looking for things to do in Cairns, free things to do in Cairns or things to do in Cairns with kids, make sure you check out the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon. It’s certainly a sight worth checking out, especially at dusk and dawn.
